After weeks of mystery, a woman followed her heart up a mountain and found a starving dog holding on for life.

In a quiet part of the Colorado mountains, people had been talking about something unusual—a dog crying at night. Some thought it might be a coyote since there were no homes nearby. It didn’t seem likely that a dog could survive alone in such a remote place.

But Trinity Smith, who loves animals, felt like she had to do something. There had also been a dog reported missing in that area about six weeks earlier. Trinity couldn’t stop thinking about it, so she decided to check it out.

In September 2017, she hiked into the mountains to look for answers.

As soon as Trinity got up the mountain, she realized the rumors were true. She could hear barking, and it definitely sounded like a dog. But the sound was far away, and it was hard to tell where it was coming from.

When it started to get dark, she had to turn back. But she now knew someone—or something—was out there.

The next day, she returned with her friend Sean Nichols. They called out for the dog, taking turns yelling as loudly as they could. For about three hours, there was nothing.

Just when they were about to give up, they finally heard a bark. This time, they could tell which direction it came from and started heading toward it.

After climbing through rough terrain, they found a dog lying on the ground, holding onto a rock. She was so thin and weak, barely able to move. It was clear she hadn’t eaten in a long time and was close to giving up.

They carefully picked her up and carried her down the mountain.

At the time, they didn’t know who she was. But they would soon learn the dog was Chloe, a 14-year-old who had run off during a walk with her owners six weeks earlier.

Chloe’s family had been searching for her for weeks but had started to lose hope. When Trinity posted on social media about finding the dog, the family saw the message and reached out.

While Trinity and Sean were on their way to buy dog food, they arranged to meet the family in a nearby parking lot. That’s where Chloe and her owners were finally reunited. Even though she was weak and tired, Chloe knew exactly who they were.

It was an emotional moment for everyone.

When they found Chloe, she weighed just 26 pounds. That’s extremely underweight for a dog her size. After spending six weeks alone in the wild, it was amazing she had survived at all.

But even after all that, Chloe was already starting to show signs of recovery. She was still weak, but she was safe, warm, and loved.

Trinity and Sean didn’t have to search that mountain. They could’ve believed it was just a coyote. But they listened, they cared, and they kept going, even when it seemed like a long shot.

Because of them, Chloe is back with her family and getting stronger every day.

Here’s to a full recovery for Chloe and a big thank-you to the heroes who saved her.
