Woman with unusual skin problem beats bad comments and finds true love
The widespread use of social media has led to a constant stream of pictures showcasing people who seem flawless. This has made the world appear more focused on looks, making it tough for those who don’t match the usual standards of beauty.
Karine de Souza, a woman from Brazil, knows the harsh side of this reality due to her uncommon skin condition. She has to use high-level sunscreen all the time, even inside her house. People who don’t fit into the typical image of perfection can face harsh comments and criticism on social media from others.

Karine de Souza was diagnosed with a rare condition known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum when she was only three years old. This diagnosis placed her at a high risk of developing skin cancer. Her unique condition, which affects one in a million people and is incurable, makes her extraordinarily susceptible to UV rays due to her skin’s inability to repair any sun damage.
Merely a few minutes of sun exposure can result in agonizing sunburn for Karine. During her childhood, she often had to remain indoors, separated from the outside world. The risk associated with prolonged exposure to the sun made it too perilous for her to spend excessive time outdoors.

Karine de Souza explains that when she is exposed to the sun, she doesn’t feel the damage immediately. However, over time, sun-induced lesions appear that need to be surgically removed due to cancer risks. Throughout her life, she has undergone around 130 surgeries to remove these lesions, which included the removal of her lower lip and part of her nose.
In addition to the physical challenges, Karine also faces social struggles. She often experiences people staring at her in public and has been subjected to verbal abuse both in her community and on the internet.
Even though Karine de Souza has faced numerous hardships, she continues to have a positive and joyful attitude. Moreover, she has discovered love. Karine met her husband, Edmilson, through social media. He was captivated by her journey and her resilience. Edmilson has been a steadfast support for Karine and decided early on that he wanted to spend his life with her.
Additionally, Edmilson embraced Karine’s three children from a previous relationship, which meant the world to her. Karine expresses her happiness by saying, “He came and he showed me that I could live a true love story”.

However, when Karine shared pictures of herself and Edmilson online, she was once again faced with a barrage of hurtful comments. According to the Daily Mail, Karine said, “We have already read many offensive comments calling me a monster, deformed, a zombie.” Some people even doubted the sincerity of their relationship. They made assumptions that Karine must be a “sugar mommy” and speculated that she was wealthy.
Karine expressed that because Edmilson is young and good-looking, people found it hard to believe that he could be with her for genuine affection.
A photographer who took pictures of Karine and Edmilson after their engagement shared some of the photos online and wrote a heartfelt message. The photographer said, “In a world where appearance matters more than the feeling, they met not by chance, but by a gathering of souls, an encounter of acceptance and character and love emerged when their souls met and today you are the inspiration to so many people who do not believe in themselves, in life and especially in love.”

The touching words and splendid photos captured by the photographer of Karine and Edmilson touched the hearts of many people online and became viral. Thousands of people reacted by posting congratulatory messages for the couple. Karine, with her unwavering optimism, wants to convey a message to others about the significance of staying positive. She advises, “Be happy, smile, because life happens only once.”
In 2023, the couple’s joy was multiplied as they welcomed their baby girl, Zaia. Karine and Edmilson had been eagerly looking forward to becoming parents, as they had been trying for a baby since 2020. Despite the hardships she faced, Karine’s positive outlook led her to the happiness she so rightly deserves. Her story serves as an inspiration and it is hoped that by sharing it, others in similar situations will be encouraged and inspired.
